Two-step workflow

From raw survey data to tested crosstabs

Crosstab Studio is a pair of browser tools I built for survey work. The Mapping tool turns respondent-level data into weighted cross-tabulations; the Analyzer runs the significance tests and writes the findings. Nothing is uploaded to a server: your data stays in your browser and the tables travel between the two tools inside the link.

Step 1 Mapping Raw data to cross-tabs

Mapping tool

Upload an Excel or CSV file of respondent-level data, tell the tool which columns are multi-select questions, choose the row and banner variables, and apply rim weighting if the sample needs balancing. It builds the cross-tabs with weighted, unweighted and effective bases, ready for the Analyzer.

  • Excel and CSV input, single and multi-response questions
  • Rim weighting to population targets with weight diagnostics
  • Category editing: rename, combine or drop answer options
  • One click sends every table to the Analyzer; CSV and Excel export too

Step 2 Analyzer Tests, highlights, findings

Analyzer tool

Receives the tables from Mapping, or takes a crosstab you paste from Excel, import from a file, or type in. Switch between counts and percentages, run column proportion z-tests, chi-square and top-box / bottom-box comparisons, and let it write the significant differences in plain language, largest first.

  • Column z-tests with letter notation, Bonferroni option and minimum base rule
  • Weighted tables tested on the effective base
  • Top-N / Bottom-M and net score analysis
  • Auto-written findings, cell highlights, bookmarks, Excel and CSV export
Open the Analyzer

How the two tools work together

  1. 1
PrepareOne row per respondent, one column per question. Multi-select questions can be one column per option or a delimited list.
  2. 2
Map and weightPick the questions to cross, set weighting targets if needed, and review the tables.
  3. 3
Send to the AnalyzerThe tables open in the Analyzer with their bases already in place. The Mapping button there brings you back.
  4. 4
Test and reportRun the tests you want, read the auto-written findings, export the table with its significance letters.

Already have a crosstab from another tool? Skip Mapping and paste it straight into the Analyzer. The single and multiple two-proportion z-test calculators cover one-off comparisons.
